ANOTHER GREEN TEA HEALTH BENEFIT: L-THEANINE
Sunday, June 29, 2008, 04:40 PM - Health and Green Tea
Green tea contains a range of compounds which are believed to confer health benefits. These include powerful antioxidants with the ability to neutralize free radicals in the body and possibly lower the risk of some cancers, heart disease and strokes.

Much of the publicity relating to the health benefits of green tea has concentrated on the presence of a series of polyphenols which contain powerful antioxidant qualities, most notably epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG).

A fact which receives less publicity is the presence in green tea of a unique neurologically active amino acid called L-theanine.

L-theanine is found almost exclusively in tea plants and is said to be the source of the calming effect of green tea. It appears to have a neutralizing effect on the caffeine content of tea.
